Don’t Skip The Steps – They’re Important

You can’t be the best if you skip the steps!

Don’t skip the steps, because they’re important… Life is a journey and a process. Through your process, you will find steps. These steps can lead you up, but they can also lead you down. We all start out the same; we crawl around until we learn how to walk.

And the way we learn how to walk is one step at a time. But as we get older and more confident in our abilities we think we can skip a few steps in order to get to the top faster. The result of this can be tragic, however, and cause us to go down instead of up.

Yesterday was my birthday, and I turned 43. Birthdays are not what they use to be. The older you get the less you look forward to them.

As I was thinking about my birthday this week, I couldn’t help but look back at my life. I spent some time reflecting on school and growing up. I took some time to reflect on my teen years and young adult years. And I realized that I have a lot of regrets. There were some bad choices that I made back then that cost me years of my life, years that I can’t get back. I had a good foundation, I had a good education, and I had the tools I needed to succeed. But I skipped some steps to speed up the process. I thought I knew what I wanted and how to get it, but I was mistaken.

I learned later in life that God had prepared something far better than I could have ever conceived.

A few years ago I preached a message called “Don’t skip the steps” and as I was reflecting back on the road of regrets this week, I came across this old message. This message is just what I needed, it’s still relevant for me today and I hope it speaks to you like it spoke to me. (The following may not be grammatically correct because it is in a sermon format, so forgive me).

1 Corinthians  2:9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.

Nobody has seen, heard, or even imagined what God has prepared for those who wait on him and love him.

God wants to bless you.

He has already prepared something special just for you.

Prepared (past tense) = already done.

If you haven’t received it yet, that’s not because it’s not ready. (It’s ready); maybe you’re not ready for it though.

God is saying I’m not preparing the blessing for you.

I’m preparing you for the blessing!

But the problem is, we don’t want to wait for it.

We pray to speed things up…

We pray to get out of stuff…

We don’t want to do the work.

We don’t want to do the steps.

We want everything today, and we want it now…

But God is saying hold on, you skipped a step, hold on you went around that, hold on you jumped ahead of me, and now you’re going to have to go back and start over.

Don’t skip the steps if you’re expecting to get all that God has prepared for you.

Don’t expect to have your prayers answered if you’re not willing to do the steps.

(There are no quick fixes.)

There’s no buy this course today for $99.99 and all your problems and cares will be resolved…It doesn’t work that way.

There’s a process we have to go through, and it involves steps.

There’s a story in the bible where Jesus feeds five thousand men plus women and children with five loaves of bread and two fish…

Afterward, the Bible says those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. (John 6:14-15)

They tried to crown Jesus too soon. They tried to make him a king before it was time, so He departed.

Because he had to go through some steps before he could be the king.

It would be His cross that would make his crown.

It’s your sickness that makes your healing. It’s your depression that makes your joy. It’s your poverty that makes your prosperity.

It’s your suffering that makes your blessing.

The bad things make you recognize and appreciate the good things.

You don’t even notice good health until you’ve been sick. You don’t notice joy until you’ve been depressed. You don’t notice success until you’ve been unsuccessful. You don’t notice the blessing until you’ve been suffering.

You’ll never thank God for something until you haven’t had it.

It’s the cross that makes Jesus’ crown.

He had to go through some stuff, some struggles, some hard times, some steps in order to be crowned.

We usually don’t see the steps someone has gone through, in order to obtain their results. This causes envy and jealousy as we wonder why other people are being so blessed and were not…

A lot of people may be thinking I’m more qualified, I work harder, I study more, I read more, I do more…

Why is he receiving the promotion?

Why is she getting all the recognition?

Why are they so blessed and not stressed?

Why God why???

Maybe it’s because you’re not ready yet! Maybe it’s because there are more steps you need to do first!

God knows when you’re ready…

If He gives you something too soon or blesses you to early you might destroy it, or it might destroy you.

If I was to buy my son a brand new car today and give it to him, he would destroy it, or it would destroy him…

But if I was to hold onto that car and give it to him in about 10 years when he has a license and some training and some experience, then he will be better equipped to handle it.

Same car, same person, just better timing!

God’s timing is the best timing.

If God would have called me 20 years ago to preach this message or any message… I wouldn’t have had anything to preach about.

Because I believe you gotta live it to be able to preach it…

I believe you gotta go through a test to have a testimony…

I believe you gotta go through a mess to have a message…

I believe you gotta go through a fire to be on fire…

I believe you gotta go through the valley to get to the mountain top…

Anybody that has had any kind of success has gone through some kind of a struggle.

I guarantee if you look at their life you will find that they had to go through some steps to be where they are today.

The difference is some perceive struggles to be bad while others perceive struggles to be good.

Struggles can weaken you or they can strengthen you.

They can be your defeat or they can be your victory.

If your not willing to go through the struggles and the hard times, don’t expect to see the victories and the good times.

Nobody has seen, heard, or even imagined what God has prepared for those who wait on him and love him.

Wait on the Lord! And don’t skip the steps.

The steps are there for a reason they are ordered by God.

Every step is a learning experience. Every step is important. I regret skipping the steps. I regret getting ahead of God. I regret it!

Don’t skip the steps!

Ask God to fill you with the courage, the strength, the determination, the discipline it takes to get you through the steps.

I promise it will be worth it if you do.

This message was a good reminder for me and I hope it blessed you. As always I would love to hear from you…
