1 Simple Step To Transformation

I want to offer 1 simple step to transformation… I have come a long way, in my journey. I have overcome some huge obstacles and beaten the odds. But yet I still struggle in certain areas of my life. I’m still not satisfied with where I am. I still want more than I have. I still feel insignificant at times and un-important. I still look for ways to fit in and be known for something great. I still long for attention and recognition, and not receiving it causes unhappiness, unfulfillment and even depression at times.

I am so grateful and thankful that I’m not where I use to be, but if I’m honest, I am still not where I want to be. I want to be healthy, wealthy, and happy. I want to be able to make a difference in peoples lives and help them. I want to be that encourager that people come to. I want to be that friend that people look to. I want to be that lover that my wife is drawn to.

But no matter what I try or what I do I still come up short from time to time. I still don’t get the results I’m looking for and it causes me to not feel so good about myself.

But yesterday while listening to a podcast by life coach Brook Castillo something clicked for me, and I wanted to share it. She had a lot of encouraging things to say but one simple step stuck out to me. This one simple step is what I believe to be the answer for me. This one simple step is what I believe is needed to overcome your adversities and challenges. This one simple step is what I believe to be the solution to breakthrough. This one simple step is what I believe is needed to transform your life.

I have been clean for 12 years now, and when I think back to how I overcame a 15-year drug addiction it was this one simple step.

Now, of course, I have to give God all the credit, because He put me in a place for this to happen. He made a way for me when there seemed to be no way. He deserves all the glory, but there is something subtle, yet so remarkable that I did that I believe transformed my life.

Let me explain – Before God saved me I had some bad circumstances surrounding me. Circumstances that I created but circumstances that I couldn’t get out of on my own. I needed help and God was the one that eventually helped me. But once he picked me up and set me on solid ground a transformation took place that I could never really explain, until yesterday. It hit me like a ton of bricks. It was the a-ha moment. It was one simple step that I did without even realizing it.

There is a scripture that comes to mind that explains this one simple step, it is found in Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

 Did you catch it?

There are a few nuggets in that verse that theologians could pull out, like don’t be conformed to this world and do the will of God but I want to keep it simple for my simple folks…

Right in the middle of that verse is what did it for me.

be transformed by the renewing of your mind

The word mind comes from the Greek word (nous) which means: the God-given capacity of each person to think (reason); mental capacity to exercise reflective thinking. For the believer, 3563 (noús) is the organ of receiving God’s thoughts, through faith.

So in layman terms… Be transformed by the renewing of your thinking! This is revolutionary to me. It blows my mind to realize that my thinking contributed majorly to changing my life.

I was able to think about my situation differently and because of that, produce a different outcome —A transformed life!

This one simple step is this: Change your stinkin’ thinkin’

We all have those thoughts in our head, thoughts of good things, but also thoughts of bad things. And for some people, it is a battle, an everyday struggle. These thoughts are dictating your feelings, which are dictating your actions, which are dictating your results. And no matter how hard you try to change the results you keep failing. That’s because you can’t change your results if you don’t change your actions. And you can’t change your actions if you don’t change your feelings. And you can’t change your feelings if you don’t change your thoughts.

Everything begins with a thought.

It was Jesus who saved me but it was changing my thinking that transformed me. When we replace our old thinking with a renewed thinking our life will begin to change.

I realized I had a story, and I decided in my mind that it was going to be a past story, not a present day story. I began to see and think about myself differently. I began to separate myself from the old me by thinking like a new me.

I realized in my mind that I didn’t go through all I went through for nothing. And I thought — I don’t ever have to go through it again. I looked at my situation differently. I thought of it differently. And this new thinking kept me from repeating old habits and patterns.

Circumstances cause us to think a certain way and feel a certain way.

For years my circumstances led me to think of myself as a loser, an addict, and a “nobody”, but when I changed my thinking I was able to change the way I saw myself. I began to see myself as a winner, an overcomer, and a “somebody”. This thinking changed my feelings about myself and caused me to make better choices, which produced better results.

This is so important because that means today I can do the same. I can change my life just like I did 12 years ago by simply thinking about my situation and life differently. My feelings of insignificance and unhappiness and even depression can change if I change my thoughts. I don’t know about you, but that is exciting!

Because if I can change the way I feel about myself then I can change my actions and my choices, which produce healthier and more prosperous results. Just because I don’t have what I want or just because I’m not where I want to be, doesn’t mean I can’t be happy and feel good about myself. Happiness and feeling significant aren’t dependent on what we have or where we are. They’re dependent on how we feel about our self and what we think.

People who are overweight think if they could be thin then they would be happy and enjoy life. People who are poor think if they could be rich then they would be happy and excited about life again. But we know this is not the case. There are plenty of unhappy thin folks as well as depressed rich folks.

So why am I telling you all this? Why am I so excited about it? Because I believe if you can change your stinkin’ thinkin’ then you can change your feelings, which will change your life!

So how do we change our stinkin’ thinkin’?

I’m glad you asked…

What do you think about when you’re the happiest, what do you think about when you feel the best?

Take a minute right now to write those thoughts down…

Now imagine if you could have those same thoughts all the time. Well, guess what you can. You just have to choose to think those thoughts no matter what comes your way. You can have a good day even if your world is crashing all around you. You can be happy even if you have terrible news. Because your feelings are caused by your thoughts. Change your thoughts and you will change your feelings. Change your feelings and you will change your actions. Change your actions and you will change your life.

My prayer is that this change moves you, to where you want to be. My prayer is that this change allows you, to do what you want to do.

There is no limit to what you can do if you can learn to control your thoughts.

Our thinking, our reasoning, our minds are more powerful than the most advanced computers in the world. Take the time to understand what goes on in your mind. Learn how to use your mind to achieve your goals.

One last tip before I go—If you are struggling to think about, realize, or remember your thoughts when feeling happy and feeling good, then try this: whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
